Partial Hospitalization and Intensive Outpatient

Senior mental health Program

Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP) & Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP)

Overview

Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP) and Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are options for patients who do not need the level of care of inpatient treatment, but require a more structured community-based program compared to traditional outpatient treatment. Patients admitted to these outpatient programs work toward overcoming symptoms of mental health, behavioral health, and/or substance use challenges.

Both programs work well for individuals who need additional treatment support and want to continue to go to work or school. Patients in both types of outpatient programs have individual treatment plans tailored to their specific needs and receive treatment from mental health professionals. The length of the PHP or IOP differs from person to person as patients develop skills and resources to manage their illness in the least restrictive environment with the greatest number of natural supports.

Admission Criteria

* Male and Female

* 18 years of age and older

* The individual has mental health, substance use, or behavioral symptoms that significantly interfere with relationships, self-care, or vocational functioning

* Symptoms are not responding to current outpatient therapy or medicine

* The individual is not a danger to self or others and is able to function adequately outside of a hospital

* The individual is medically stable and motivated to participate in the program

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)
(6 to 7 hours a day/4 to 5 days a week, 4 to 8 weeks)
PHP Hours: Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

A Partial Hospitalization Program, or day hospital, is a very structured program that provides several hours of therapy and daily groups to assist patients with skill building. Treatment includes group therapy, individual therapy, family sessions, activity/recreational/art therapy, and medication management. A variety of treatment groups are conducted to promote patient engagement and enhance learning of how to take care of themselves.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)
(3 hours a day, 2 – 3 days a week, 6 to 8 weeks)
IOP Hours: Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

The Intensive Outpatient Program is less rigorous than the Partial Hospitalization Program and is designed to help patients develop relapse prevention skills and learn evidence-based therapeutic interventions to maintain their stability.

All individuals who engage in IOP receive personalized treatment plans tailored to meet their unique needs to ensure individual treatment goals can be most appropriately met. The length of the IOP program differs from person to person as they start to manage symptoms and plan for successful community and family reintegration.
