Social Work and the Impact on Behavioral Health

Social work plays an important role in the overall healthcare of patients. Behavioral healthcare is no exception. Social workers use their expertise in human behavior, psychology, and psychiatry to assess, diagnose, and treat mental illness, behavioral issues, and substance use disorders. Social workers are highly trained and provide critical help and support for patients and their families while navigating through the behavioral health treatment process.

According to the National Association of Social Workers (NASW), social workers “help individuals, families, and groups restore or enhance their capacity for social functioning, and work to create societal conditions that support communities in need.”

In 1984, the White House designated March as National Social Work Month. Each year, the NASW provides education about social issues, the role of social workers, and how they benefit society to further promote the profession.

“At Peak, we are continuously grateful, in March and throughout the year, for the positive impact that social workers have on our patients,” says Sandra Emanuel, Chief Operating Officer at Peak Behavioral Health Services. “Social workers are an essential part of the treatment team that helps our behavioral health patients return to their prior living conditions.”

Clinical social workers are the largest group of mental health service providers in the country, according to the NASW. During this recognition month of March, Peak Behavioral Health Services recognizes the commitment our social workers have to the treatment and assistance of our patients and their families this month, and every month throughout the year.
